What is SEM?

SEM, or Search Engine Marketing, is a method of online marketing that utilizes search engines.

All marketing methods on search engine platforms can be referred to as SEM. In the industry, SEM is often called "paid promotion" or "advertising placement".

Currently, the common understanding is that advertisers invest money on search engine platforms (such as Baidu, Google, Sogou, 360, etc.) to display ads, attracting customer attention, clicks, and generating traffic.

A vivid analogy: When we search for keywords on Baidu, ads appear on the search results page. These ads are managed by advertisers through backend operations, allowing adjustments to keywords, creatives, and bids to control spending and display—this is SEM.

Currently, Baidu remains the dominant search engine in China in terms of traffic, with other search engines following Baidu's model for expansion.

What is the difference between SEM and SEO?

SEM generally refers to paid promotion, where advertisers invest money in search engine backends to secure relevant rankings. Search results pages typically display the word "Ad". SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a technical approach that involves targeted website optimization to improve natural rankings on search engines, attract more visitors, and increase website traffic. On search engine platforms, this is displayed as "Baidu Snapshots".
